38. Descent of the Holy Ghost

The apostles went again to the supper-room in 1 which they usually assembled. There they pray-
d fervently. Mary also, the mother of Jesus, and many disciples were with them, so that they numbered about one hundred and twenty persons.

2. On the tenth day, suddenly, there came a sound from heaven, as of a mighty rushing wind, and it filled the whole house where they were sitting. There appeared to them cloven tongues as of fire, and it came down upon every one of them. And they were filled with the Holy Ghost, and began to speak in divers tongues.

3. Now at the sound of the wind, the people of Jerusalem gathered together. And Peter stood forth, and said: "Jesus is risen from the dead and sits now at the right Text Box: hand of God, the Father." Many believed and were baptized; and that same day about three thousand were received into the church.

39. The Church of Christ begins to Spread all over the Earth

Pentecost being over, the apostles went out into the world, and preached the good tidings of salvation. In the name of Jesus Text Box: they also wrought many miracles. And the number of those that believed increased from day to day, and the Church of Christ was established in many lands. The apostles consecrated bishops and ordained priests.

2. The head of the Church was Peter, whom the Lord had made first in pastorship.  When people who were not Jews begin to believe in Jesus, the decision had to be made whether these people, known as Gentiles, had to become Jews before becoming Christians.  St. Peter asked St. James, who was the Bishop of Jerusalem, to call a Council of all the leaders of the Church.  In that Council, called the First Council of Jerusalem, it was decided that Gentiles did not have to become Jews to become Christians.  This showed that Christianity was the New Covenant, and it also showed that when all the Bishops join in a Great Council and ask Jesus to guide them in making decisions, that Jesus sends the Holy Spirit to guide the Bishops.  The successor of St. Peter is the Pope in Rome, who is also the Bishop of Rome and the Patriarch of Rome, and also the Patriarch of Antioch, which is where St. Peter first ruled as Bishop.
