Sad image of Mother of God
In the center of the icon there is an image of Mother of God. The writing to her right says: "Sad image of Mother of God". On the left lower side of the icon there is an image of Saint Evdokia. This icon is a very rare example of Russian iconography - unlike hundreds of other icons, Mother of God holds her right hand to her face.
Like most of the Russian icons, this one is not dated or signed by the iconographer. Russian iconographers had to fast, pray and abstain from all the wordly pleasures before and during their sacred work.
The icon is executed in the style of Moscow School of Icon painting.
Size: 10.5/ 12 inches.
Painted in: City of Smolensk, Russia, this 18th century Russian icon is painted on an antique birch wood. It has two wooden wedges called "shponki" in the back to prevent contraction and expansion of wood. Six or eight layers of gesso or "levkas" (a glue-chalk mixture) is applied on the front side of the wood to obtain a perfectly smooth surface.
A piece of absorbent paper is placed under the gesso, to provide better adherence of the material to the background. Painting in the old style is executed with egg tempera. Pulverized minerals and ground organic color substances are mixed with egg yolk and vinegar or kvas.
